WomEng, in partnership with the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership is proud to announce the launch of our Africa Catalyst Phase III project, Capacity Building for Women in Engineering Bodies in West Africa, funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering GCRG Africa Catalyst Programme.
This project builds on the Capacity Building for Women in Engineering Bodies in Sub-Saharan Africa project funded under the Africa Catalyst Phase II Programme. A key insight WomEng gained through this project is that each African country has different needs and in different stages of maturity, requiring an agile framework of best practices to be further developed for Sub-Saharan Africa. In Capacity Building for Women in Engineering Bodies in West Africa, WomEng will be working with professional engineering institutions in Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, namely Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, Ghana Institution of Engineering and Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers. This project has the ability to shift the needle on gender parity and assist industry with the attraction of high-end engineering skills to foster growth in the country.
The key outcomes for this project are to:
- Strengthen the institutional capacity of relevant stakeholders by building capacity through women in engineering chapters in engineering bodies
- Increase knowledge among engineering bodies about effective practices for improving gender diversity in engineering.
Ultimately the programme will change the mindset around STEM for girls and university students to meet the skills requirements of industry. This project is strategically designed to further understand, ideate, plan and execute activities that foster best practice, development and relevance of the engineering bodies amongst engineering professionals in West Africa. The impact of this project will improve the capacity of engineering bodies to promote gender diversity and relevance within engineering and engineering professionals in West Africa.
This project will be running until June 2021.
